Driving with your fog lights on when it's not foggy is not cool, but I respect everyone's ability to use their fog lights however they want. :p

A proper fog light beam is low enough to not be a dazzle risk. So, while Bill is right to not use fogs when it’s not foggy, or otherwise visibility-limited, the manufacturer who made fog lights that dazzle is a jerk, too.

There’s got to be one of these for Dick, driving a bro truck with an LED lightbar right at rearview mirror level.

The thing is most factory fog lights - at least in the US - are cosmetic and not much more. The ones in my fiancee’s Ford Flex light up about 2-3 feet of the road ahead of me. That’s it. And they don’t do a thing to help in actual fog.

I’ll bet Bill also doesn’t drive around town with his high beams on.

“The ones in my fiancee’s Ford Flex light up about 2-3 feet of the road ahead of me. That’s it.”

Yes, they’re fog lights. That’s what fog lights do. If they light up any further in front of you, they just light up the fog and make it impossible to see anything at all.

“A proper fog light beam is low enough to not be a dazzle risk.”

Not if the road is wet.

Well my daytime running lights are my fog lights, what can I do?

Fair, although if I push the point a bit further in your direction, it is the road surface which raises the dazzle risk, not the specific nature of the light source. Heck, the sun can reflect off of some of the concrete surfaces or really smooth tarmac here in a way which is positively nightmarish.

I’d rather have 100 people with their fog lights on than a single dipshit with “custom upgraded” headlights aimed all wonky. I don’t even notice people with their fogs on anymore.

I’ve put decent Hella fog lights on a couple of my cars, and they did a far better job of lighting up the road ahead of me through the fog than these glow worms. I can barely even tell when they’re on.

In the U.K. it’s illegal to use fog lights when it’s not foggy.

So that takes away from the option of doing what you wish.

I just aim the mirror back out the rear window now. The saab doesn’t even have a day/night mirror so that’s really all I can do anyway.

It depends on how thick the fog is. In really thick fog, the idea is to light up the road directly in front of you as you crawl along. If they shine further forwards, they just create a wall of glare.

But fog lights are specifically designed to shine on the road, so having them on will create a wall of dazzling spray for oncoming drivers to be blinded by.

Except USDM and CDM cars don’t have fog lights that do jack, only European cars actually have bright fogs. I don’t have a problem with people using fogs, I have never been blinded by fogs on a car. Literally never.

In the UK fog lights actually are bright.

I 100% agree with that image, but the inverse is even worse. The idiots who drive in thick fog but can’t be bothered to turn on their lights. Now THAT is stupid.

I do not respect everyone’s ability to use their fog lights however they want. If I see someone with fog lights on when its not severely foggy then I am going to assume they are a complete idiot and should be avoided. I’ve seen so many people driving at night with drls and fog lights and nothing else. But then again almost all automotive lighting is severely misused. We just need more Bills in our lives.

I sometimes have mine on, but they are very low to the ground and not very bright...you could hardly call them fog lights.

Now on the Bimmer, I don’t. Those things are bright as hell.

And you respect everyone’s ability to use their knives however they want, ie stabbing people they don’t like?

People using things how they want in itself is not justification for anything. People should be considerate.
